20.06.09 Diary Extra: Grading/Workshop Report
Jun 21st, 2009 by Jamie Clubb
CCMA’s ninth official grading and our first all junior one. Tony Somers, 5th dan British Combat Association, very kindly stepped in at the last minute as our guest examiner. There was a wide range of grades from first to sixth testing this time. CCMA assesses on transparent effieciency and attitude rather than precision of technique. We are interested in how a person responds under pressure to various situations. A guest examiner often comes from a completely different martial ars background, their main requisite being that they have a legitimate background in realistic self defence methods. Tests ranged from self defence soft skills or knowledge and pre-emptive striking drills, including role play and impact development through to attribute training such as MMA sparring, boxing and grappling. Senior grades are expected to be able to coach under pressure and also go through various multiple attack drills designed to test various attributes. After a reaction test the class participate in a high energy workout designed to test their mental will. After narrowing the choices down to three, Tony Somers decided to give the grading award to Alexander Shirley our new purple sash for his ability to coach and his resilence to the very demanding multiple attack drills.
The workshop was a low key and relaxed affair giving more time to important details. The students put some hand and feet striking combinations together and then focused on getting their core defensive base strong. This was done using the two coaches’ approach. One holds the focus mitts and gives physical feedback when the striking side exposes an opening or is too slow to retract. The other coach is positions behind and responsible for the checking that the other protecting hand doesn’t drop. We then moved onto some groundwork, focusing on the sit-through movement. This is used to escape to the back and also to deliver an alligator roll choke.
