Juniors With two new students visiting us tonight the opportunity was open for a holistic training session. We focused on mixed martial arts (MMA), but also discussed self defence. We revised the three phases of a conflict, pre, in and post before moving onto the hard skills of the in-fight and the sporting aspects of MMA. The in-fight or MMA fight has, of course, three ranges. We began in chronological order with stand-up. This came in the form of some simple combination work, using jab/cross as a base. From this we covered punches and kicks, and punches to cover and clinch with knees. This was followed by some freestyle padwork before moving onto the clinch range. After some pummelling with underhooks and overhooks to train the mid attack line, we did a basic mid line to low line takedown combination. The physical side to class finished with some guard passing with strikes to work the ground range. By popular demand I did school subject/martial arts connection test. The subject was R.E., which we have had before. Many cultures have incorporated religion and their indigenous belief systems into the practice of martial arts. Consequently there are Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Shintoist, Taoist and many other belief systems that practiced and symbolized in the practice of martial arts. CCMA has no religious background and has very little ritual save for a saluation at the beginning and end of classes. It is a secular practice and isn’t really even a system, but more of a method or approach. Nevertheless, I personally find the study of religion to be a fascinating subject that can be used to understand the thoughts behind the history of the majority of martial arts systems and their most famous teachers. As most subjects have now been done to death I have decided to change the connection game to one on old folk or fairy tales. Seniors The class began with some fight specific all over body movement exercises. As we had an odd number, I decided to use good time management and worked on various exercises designed to make use of groups of three. A good exercise for this, which develops a good range of attributes is piggy in the middle strike and receive padwork. One person holds the pads for combinations whilst a pad-man behind continuously strikes the head of the “piggy”. The piggy’s response is to cover whilst striking and then, in response to the strikes he is receiving to the head, he turns on the pad-man behind. The process is then immediately repeated. The ranges are swiftly changed too and all three participants keep moving. This means the piggy strikes and covers from standing, from his knees, from a seated position and from his back. The exercise promotes the feel of dealing with mulitiple attackers and also develops other attributes. You learn to keep on attacking even when receiving strikes and to seamlessly move through ranges and back and to change angles whilst moving and trainsitioning from many different positions. I then recapped on the clinch range, which was the focus of last week’s class. Neck wrestling, head only wrestling and pummelling was followed by winner-stays-on takedown sparring with strikes. This brought us up to date. Moving onto the ground we worked on the top position and how to use strikes to set up for submissions. From side control and scarf hold we looked at the arm triangle, frist practicing it with a compliant but moving partner and then in specific sparring. The same process was repeated with reverse arm triangle from the northsouth position. Next week we will move onto guard.
