General Lesson
We focused entirely on the clinch range today. This began with neck pummelling, working the plumb position. We warmed up by working for the inside-clinch position. The exercise increases in intensity and footwork is then introduced with an emphasis on taking the opponent’s balance. I then introduced various knee strikes. This led onto different highline clinch positions. We then went to the midline and worked on under hooks. From here we took the back using the single under hook. Then we covered the shoulder lock into the single leg takedown. The session was finished with several rounds of clinch-fighting and a warm down.
Private Lesson
We focused on moving whilst in different postures. The session began with an extended workout that largely consisted of getting to the feet from various postures for repetitions. This is a great way to train recovery behaviour for combat and it recruits a large number of muscles to improve overall conditioning. Then we moved onto the focus mitts for isolated movements.
My clients worked general boxing combinations from combat base (kneeling), butterfly guard (seated) and bridging/snaking (back) positions. These exercises encouraged good coordination, as the positions are inherently alien to most people. We changed coaches and worked the positioning from different angles, testing balance and agility.
We brought training back to the self-defence line by transitioning from the postures to standing whilst striking. Then we isolated a sitting scenario and worked rear hand offline striking.
