General Lesson
We began with stand-up striking. This was mainly aimed at conditioning as opposed to technique. All students drilled straight striking, hooks and kicks at speed and then with power. We then looked at clinch and escaping the headlock into a waist-lock. Headlocks are primal grappling moves. Even if someone is untrained they are likely to try to put a person in a headlock to restrain them. This can be to wrestle them to the floor or to hold them in place to deliver strikes to the face. Therefore, I see it as good basic combat grappling to be able to escape this hold at all stages. My preference is to get students to instinctively slip the hold as they feel it coming on and take the back position on their attacker. From here we looked at variations on rear waist-lock takedowns. The class finished with MMA sparring.
Private Lesson 1
Today we looked at the cover position and power development. The cover is a great tactic for MMA and self-protection. It transitions between striking and grappling ranges, providing the user a chance to regain the initiative when met with a barrage of hand strikes. In this context we looked at the sport, training it from stand-up, where we attacked high, mid and low lines, as well as guard and defence against the full mount position.
Power development was done through isolating single strikes and having them done from restrictive positions. We also used resistance bands.
Private Lesson 2
Our self-defence section covered footwork against multiple attackers, the fence, transitioning through postures, the cover and anti-grappling. We then looked at some attribute training in the form of kickboxing, working basic punch and kick combinations.
