06.08.14 This is the seventh lesson in my client’s course on Muay Thai for martial artscross-training. Every course is different, depending on various individualistic factors, but the rough structure for this lesson and the next one is concerned with the layering of basic techniques. This includes variations on combinations and tactics. I split them between kickboxing techniques, for this lesson, and clinch techniques for the next lesson. We began with an overall revision of basic Muay Thai on the focus mitts. My client warmed up with basic boxing combinations and defence-work, I then incorporated the low line kicks, building up to the mid and high line kicks. Clinch work was then added on with work with elbows, knees and use of the plumb position. Then we focused on our lesson’s theme by exploring the short round kick. This largely defensive tactic was taught to me by kru Tony Hayes and I have found to be a good option for jamming an opponent. It also comes off nicely after leg-blocking an opponent off the lead leg. We then worked this into combinations. We then explored the action/reaction flow of techniques and looked at it from the same side. Previously I have coached the typical opposite side combination found in most Muay Thai. Now, we looked at jab/lead front kick (teep), which also evolved into jab/lead front kick, jab/lead leg-block and jab/lead short round kick. We then doubled up on the jabs and also brought in the cross. I looked a lot at recovery and balance. This was a reoccurring observation. No standard tactic risks a fighter’s balance more than kicking, so we looked at various ways to correct posture and stance when striking. We then moved onto some bag-work and ways to incorporate the techniques taught today into solo training. The lesson was then finished with full sparring.
