22.10.18 Tonight my junior and senior classes focused on body shots and working from corners respectively. The junior session continued my client's sixth lesson in Basic Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training. My senior session was focused on my long-time client's stand-up fighting – Western Boxing and Muay Thai. My junior client began with some line-work. We looked at coordinating footwork and upper body mobility. By building up techniques and combinations step-by-step, my main area of work was to keep everything moving in the same direction. This type of training exposes weaknesses in the guard and stability in the stance. We then moved onto the focus mitts, covering the same combinations and footwork. This progressed onto body shots. Here we looked at using the low hook to the ribs with the same side hook to the head. We also worked on the low jab in conjunction with the high jab and the L-Step. Then I introduced the shovel hooks to the spleen and liver. The lesson finished with a round of sparring. The senior lesson, being part of the family agreement for this training, over-lapped with the junior training so no warm-up was required. Instead we got straight onto the focus mitts, revising punching combinations and some freestyle boxing work. Then I brought out the Muay Thai focus mitts and we did the same. Moving onto the technical side my client looked at fighting out of a corner using both Western Boxing and Muay Thai techniques. We looked at fundamental principles with the V-step from the position, including dummying footwork one way before moving in the opposite direction, and also certain techniques that are unique to each style. Both sport's respective clinch was also touched upon. The lesson finished with a round of Western Boxing sparring and a round of Muay Thai sparring.
