The seventh part of this client’s boxing cross-training course continued on the theme of blending combinations, coordinating upper body mobility with footwork and timing, and introduced angulation and variants on the basic techniques.
We began with timing work on the bag, which was taught last time. This worked as a light warm-up with increasing intensity, as I encouraged my client to increase his number of reps each time the bag swung his way. With great impact as opposed to push, the bag should not go back far, but bend so as technique improves so the urgency to speed up repetitions grows. We varied from increased repetitions of single techniques to combinations. I worked on retaining his guard and ensuring the striking hand was retracted with enough speed.
On the pads we worked our way through the various combinations. These were done at the same as he moved, encouraging coordination of footwork. As we explored cutting off the ring and evasive tactics with the upper body, we found ourselves working on angulation. Here we covered the uppercut/hook off the same hand at a 45 degree angle on the opponent – the overhand right and the liver shot. These were then incorporated into freestyle pad-work.
