General Lesson
We took a different route for the regular students and explored some of the stick arts to build up hand/feet coordination and speed. This took us off on a tangent onto incidental weaponry training for self-defence, forearm striking for self-defence and the Thai elbow for stand-up, clinch and ground in MMA sport.
The class finished with an extended sparring session of five rounds of boxing, muay Thai, wrestling, submission grappling and MMA.
Private Lesson
My client has shown a marked improvement in his sparring, particularly in the clinch and ground. We focused on his stand-up, improving footwork and hip rotation. Footwork focused on covering distances quickly and taking advantage, as well as cutting off the ring/cage. Hip rotation is a big issue in martial arts training. The oblique muscles need to be properly engaged as force in generated up the body from the feet. The oblique muscles and hip flexors act like a hinge for this explosive motion. Hooks, upper cuts, arm-bars, round kicks and various hip throws rely on this motion.
This led us onto correct execution of the round kick. The kick can be executed in a number of ways, but the classic full range Thai version is a good foundation to understand good movement. This relies a lot on the pivoting action in addition to the hip rotation.
