General Lesson
This week we looked at ground fighting. We began with the warm-up, using basic ground movement exercises and muscle activation. I had a reassessment of form from the basic bear crawl onwards. We also looked at breakfalls and rolls. Then we went to the top position and ran through movement. Here I set a basic series of transitional pins. We gradually increased intensity until this became specific sparring.
Then we moved onto the guard and went through a basic series of three transitional submission attacks. Questions were raised regarding different escape options, which helped illustrate some of the best defences and counter-defences. We then put this under pressure for more specific sparring.
Private Lesson
Continuing our theme of attribute training for better transitioning in self-defence, we began with basic posture transitioning for the warm-up. This reinforces better movement from different postures, mindfulness of defence and the behaviour to regain footing as efficiently as possible.
Double Stick Exercises
We began with ambidextrous forehand/backhand in standing, kneeling, seated and lying postures. Then they were trained moving through these postures at increasing speed.
Kickboxing Exercises
This section consisted of punches, kicks, knees and elbows through various postures, finishing with simple boxing combinations in fast transition.
Ground Grappling Exercises
Here I isolated various grappling situations – guard, pins and from the knees – and had both clients fight for positional control.
Self Defence Exercises (multiple attack)
We transitioned through postures with two-on-one focus mitt exercises.
Escape Exercises
The session was finished with regaining the feet and tactical sprinting to various exit points. Both clients began from various postures, including being face down, and got their feet as quickly as possible to escape.
