The fourth lesson of my course for Tudor Hall School covered de-escalation techniques and strategy in the theory section, and continued our work on pre-emptive actions in the practical.
De-escalation techniques worked through managing one's own stress levels whilst understanding how social violence occurs. Students picked a series of different scenarios that were likely to occur in their social environment. Situations included accusations of stealing, gossiping and pushing in queues. Techniques included regulating pitch and speech pattern - keeping it low and slow - empathetic listening, describing the grievance and solution hunting.
Meanwhile, the practical section used the training matrix concept to bring pre-emptive actions onto focus mitts. From here we trained forward pressure and incidental combinations. The fence and tactical escape was then also layered on.
