Developing Better Self-Defence Games & Tests for Teenagers (diary entry)

                                                29.05.2024 Today I worked with Drum Martial Arts and Fitness on developing their teenager self-protection programme. We are hour five into our current teacher consultation programme. Feedback was good on how much better his younger students were understanding personal barriers, especially regarding appropriate and inappropriate touching. Carrying games has proven to be a very helpful way to introduce this concept to both children and parents, as well as opening up dialogue between all parties to ensure others cannot use secrets as dangerous barriers. We looked at more gamification and what that can mean for scenario work with teenagers. I began with pre-emptive striking. Last lesson we looked more at the demonstration test that proves against close-range blocking. This time we discussed using the wall as a restriction and having students strike whatever comes into their personal space (no fence). Other students (playing the role of antagonists) used a variety of techniques, including distraction, deception and aggression to touch their target's shoulders. After this the fence is erected. I also talked about layering the walking warm-up to promote a variety of tactics and techniques under a live situation whilst also teaching students to better control their breathing and cognitive functions. At one point issues regarding contact and realism came up. Students need to both acknowledge legitimate danger when safety measures are implemented, such as using fake weapons and pulling strikes, but also retain their tenacity. Finally, we looked at scenario work on the whole. My view is that there is a genuine danger with making scenarios too specific rather than looking towards strategies, tactics and techniques that transcend them. Children enjoy being creative with scenarios and I am not trying to dismiss this element. Keeping interest is crucial. What I recommend is the class working together to create live games that address certain scenarios and then find a game that covers them all by simplifying what needs to trained.     https://clubbchimera.com/services/
