We began this Triple C session linking together stand-up, clinch and ground techniques. However, before we focused on this area we warmed up with some boxing on the focus mitts. I like to get as much technical material in as possible at the earlier part of a lesson when I student’s mind can be more focused and better to develop correct muscle memory. The boxing consisted of building up to the standard 11 punch combination. We then introduced some basic kickboxing combinations.
The MMA combination work began with jabbing high and then shooting in for a double leg combination. We looked at the Jiu Jitsu variation of the double-leg takedown, which involves sweeping the legs to one side in order to get side control, but used the wrestling version, where the fighter ends up in his opponent’s guard. From here we added on a four-punch combination in guard then frog jumping in the guard and a further four-punch combination. The principles behind combining high and low levels of attack were then branched off into same-side striking, first with the jab/knee strike and then the jab/front kick. We then looked at the jab/shin block to set up for the cross. The mechanics of this three motion combination are very similar for the dramatic Superman punch.
My client then completed a kettlebell circuit, which he went around twice.
We will build the repetitions, but change the exercises:
Frog jumps
Snaking
Sit-Throughs
Bridging Deck Squats
45 Degree Russian Twists
