Back to Basics (diary entry)

The first hour of my client's new course saw him return to Muay Thai since we trained over Zoom during lockdown in 2020. Our previous two courses have been focused entirely on Boxing. It was a good opportunity to bring everything back down to a foundation level.

As one my old instructors used to tell me, "You are never beyond basics". Tonight we broke down five basic strikes whilst drilling footwork and defences at the same time.

The Thai jab is a step-jab in Boxing terms. Nak muays don't really punch much off the spot or, at least, they don't formally train in that way. Double-jabs are part of their basics but there isn't really a need for flicker-jabs or jabbing off a backpedal. All punches are delivered with force and, with the exception of some body shots, are executed at long punching range. Body shots are more common nowadays but even they are thrown sparingly due the fact that knee strikes are a more desirable weapon at mid and close range. The rear straight and cross are pretty much the same as Boxing's version. However, the hook is only really thrown at long punch range with a horizontal fist.

We then set up the rear round kick and switch-kick. The rear kick is set up by throwing a straight hand forward and then swinging the same arm back. The switch-kick was taught using an agility ladder and the Ali shuffle. We finished the session using the agility ladder to train the round kick motion.
