Hour two of my couple client's 10-hour programme on martial arts cross training continued work on defence. We are using Boxing as base and our main areas are guard retention and head movement.
The lesson began with 16 minutes of one-minute-on-one-minute-off back and forth punching. I stayed on for the full 16 minutes, allowing each of the two to evaluate openings and reassess their tactics. They completed a total of nine minutes of one-for-one sparring, three minutes of two-for-two combinations and three minutes of three-for-three combinations.
From here they began to become better defending and attacking simultaneously. By keeping the sparring with one foot sharing a square with me at all times they were forced to keep the momentum going and to make their counters/responses more fluid.
I then had them spar each other over a series of specific two-minute rounds:
Jab/cross to the top of the chest vs jabbing to the head (trains slipping whilst throwing punches)
Ditto
Jabs only with fist pinned to side of head and elbow to ribs vs lead hooks only (guard retention)
Ditto
