Private Lesson – Mixed Martial Arts – Stand-up/Clinch
My client is almost fully recovered from his calf and knee injuries. We could do more stand-up work and I brought back some kicking. However, we also continued and confirmed some of the speed training we focused on last week.We began with responsive flash-pad drill. Here the focus mitts are raised for very short periods of time, with the fighter often missing them. It is obviously important for the fighter to only use light strikes so as not to damage joints or the coach!
I increased speed on the focus mitts with the eight punch combination and brought in impromptu defensive work. The client met the challenge well, which confirmed his regular training outside of these classes. We built the combination up to 11 punches. We then moved onto kickboxing combinations. As I have stated before, I use the speed of the hands to dictate that of the kicks. Finally we brought in a double-leg takedown and then a sit-through to take the back.
Discussion points included further work on resistance bands. We have used them for striking, so tonight we talked about their usage in grappling. Lowline takedowns also require pushing exercises, so I referenced JC Santana’s truck pushing training. Santana has some excellent advice on functional fitness training for mixed martial artists and I highly recommend his work for further study.
