Butterfly Guard Sweeps and Traps (diary entry)

Cat & Ollie Butterfly GuardIMG_1450

20.07.2023 Thursday's early morning session was the second in my new client's short course on Submission Grappling. Having established butterfly guard as the main theme for now, we revised Tuesday's material and I introduced sweeps from different holds. The lesson began with a warm-up of dynamic stretching and muscle activation exercises followed by agility ladder drills for ground-fighting. We then went through our revision work, covering the arm-drag to back mount, body triangle and rear naked choke. From here I introduced the traditional butterfly guard sweep. Here the fighter uses an underhook and an arm grip in tandem with foot hook and, most importantly, leverage from one grounded foot to affect the sweep. This can be done in a number of ways with different grips. We switched the side of attack by using a gable grip, which then also tangented into a hammerlock submission. The threat of the hammerlock encourages the opponent to push back against the fighter who then get the sweep. We then brought in the over-hook version, which led to other submission opportunities such as the guillotine. Next, we brought in counter-moves should the opponent post up. I also showed some useful opportunities for the triangle choke. The lesson finished with a five minute round of specific sparring. This was conducted in a progressive way, beginning with weighted drilling before more pressure was added until it was actual sparring from a specific position.   https://clubbchimera.com/services/
