Chimera Kickboxing for Children

24.05.2025

On Saturday, I conducted the first of two seminars for Costwold Karate School, focusing on Chimera Kickboxing. The participants were all under 10s, which is usually a prompt to play more games. However, given my approach is very gamified, this just made matters even easier. A good deal of what I have learned as a teacher comes from working with children. Their honesty and a willingness to engage more in principles rather than get tied up in techniques, allows me to cut straight to heart of better teaching. Having such enthusiastic youngsters as those who regularly attend Cotswold Karate School, testament to the hard work put in by founder Jack Heritage and his assistants, was just the icing on the cake.

The class included the following activities:

  1. calling shoulder tag - teaching effective use of front and back foot as well as general reflexes

  2. freestyle shoulder tag - reflexes and overall movement

  3. foot-stepping - footwork

  4. freestyle shoulder tag and foot-stepping

  5. jabbing machine - drilling timing

  6. jabs vs counters

  7. one-for-one jabbing

  8. jab only sparring

  9. one-for-one teeps

  10. "stinky foot" - counters to teeps

  11. teep only sparring

  12. jabs, crosses and teeps only sparring

  13. low round kick one-for-one

  14. shin-checks vs low round kicks

  15. low round kick sparring

  16. teeps vs low round kicks

  17. boxing with round kick sparring

  18. kickboxing sparring

  19. focus mitt training
