Clinching Offline in MMA (diary entry)

25.03.15 The third lesson in the CCMA course in Mixed Martial Arts further explored universal principles for combining the ranges. We started with a revision of the previous two lessons both of which dovetail into the more clinch-range orientated training of tonight’s lesson. First we looked at using the jab to lead an attack. In the first lesson of the course we trained jabbing high and low, and then used this movement combine punching with shooting into clinch e.g. with a double leg takedown. We revised the jab/double leg takedown. In the second lesson we looked at angling off by using the slip/jab, which sets us up for an overhand punch, low round kick or single leg takedown. Angling off from the slip led us onto a timing drill. Here the coach repeatedly delivers a continuous flow of jabs from stationary position, allowing the student to time slipping and moving into the target. From this exercise we covered the standing arm triangle. This hold has a wide range of applications. In Western Boxing you would not be allowed to clinch in this manner, but you use the basic principle of tying up as a counter-offensive manoeuvre. Tommy Thompson from TVP Boxing taught me this off the timing exercise. In Muay Thai sport you are permitted to clinch using a loose triangle hold, so long as it is not a submission. Here we looked various ways to lock of an opponent, move him using the clinch hold and combine the movement with knee strikes. We then covered the simple MMA takedown using the hold. From here went to the ground and the finishing submission. The lesson finished with some light free-sparring, where all ranges and transitions from the ranges were covered.
