Tuesday morning's teaching consultancy lesson on Muay Thai finished basic punches with the uppercut and introduced knee and elbow strikes. Training began with our usual warm-up but this time immediately followed by 2 x 3 minute rounds of sparring to continue coaching the Thai range of fighting.
I introduce the Thai uppercut which is virtually indistinguishable from Boxing's upward angled hook. Thai krus don't appear to teach the traditional Boxing uppercut much if at all in basic training. We then moved onto the spear knee and its angled variation. Certain elements, especially when performing the "long knee" resemble the teep. For example, a nak muay often swings their arm in a similar manner for counterbalancing and distraction. However, they also execute this strike with a helmeted guard and in conjunction with trapping or pulling down an opponent's arms. Due to my decision to teach clinch separately, I didn't go much further into knee strikes.
The elbow strike was briefly covered using the following grouping:
Basic/Popular Elbows: Horizontal, Slashing, Spear and Smash Down
Minor Elbows: Backward, Side, Uppercut, Diagonal and Chop
Advanced/Specialised Elbows: Jumping Smashdown/Monkey Climbs the Tree and Spinning Elbow
