Closed Guard Strategy (diary entry)

26.01.2024 Hour two of my UKSO Cotswolds teacher client's second course on Submission Grappling introduced the scissor sweep. We are working within the close guard range. After a warm-up that contained some clinch revision as well as ground-fighting exercises, we completed 4 x 2 minute rounds of specific sparring to test individual concepts to attack with a closed guard.

Round 1 - Breaking posture only using the legs in a fully locked closed guard position Round 2 - The above with allowed touching only with hands Round 3 - Layering in grips Round 4 - Layering opening the guard at close range We then went back over the up and under sweep. Last lesson this was taught as a hip bump sweep. We covered layering a trap with the kimura lock whereby the opponent tries to posture back up and this enables the sweep. A crucial point here was for the fighter distract the opponent with pressure from the kimura threat whilst unlocking their legs and getting them in position for the hip bump. I then introduced the scissor sweep. Again, this worked from a similar strategy with the fighter holding the opponent down using a double collar tie and climbing their guard. As with the previous set-up, whilst the the opponent fights the hold down the fighter opens his guard and gets the far side leg in place behind the opponent's. As the opponent breaks free from one collar tie the fighter retains the single hand on the back of his head and inserts the near side leg into the top scissor position. This action should break the opponent's posture as the fighter posts with his other hand and completes the sweep. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
