My client couples' submission grappling course was concluded with a lesson dedicated to sparring. We mainly looked at attacking and defending from pins in the full sparring but covered all ranges in the warm-up.
The lesson began with compliant, free-flowing guard-passing from long, mid and close range. We then chose pins - side control, full mount and north-south - to train in specific sparring. This type of guided sparring involved both coaching whilst rolling and pausing the action for crucial teaching points. Some areas we covered included:
The importance of hip control, especially when transitioning in the top position
Moving the hips out after bridging and posting from under side control
Establishing high or low mount positions to set up attacks
Maintain a position when attacking with a submission
Getting behind an opponent's hips when defending in the turtle
Shifting the position high when holding the north-south pin
