Coaching Sparring (diary entry)

Cat & Ollie Half Guard Bottom Knee Bar & Toe HoldIMG_1643

24.10.2022 My client couples' submission grappling course was concluded with a lesson dedicated to sparring. We mainly looked at attacking and defending from pins in the full sparring but covered all ranges in the warm-up. The lesson began with compliant, free-flowing guard-passing from long, mid and close range. We then chose pins - side control, full mount and north-south - to train in specific sparring. This type of guided sparring involved both coaching whilst rolling and pausing the action for crucial teaching points. Some areas we covered included:

  • The importance of hip control, especially when transitioning in the top position

  • Moving the hips out after bridging and posting from under side control

  • Establishing high or low mount positions to set up attacks

  • Maintain a position when attacking with a submission

  • Getting behind an opponent's hips when defending in the turtle

  • Shifting the position high when holding the north-south pin
