Combat Conditing for Groundwork (diary entry)

23.10.14 Today’s conditioning was completely inspired by groundwork. We began warming up on the ground with backwards forwards crawls that included bear crawls, spider crawls and snaking/shrimping. Then we added resistance with some application exercises. This moved us onto looking at how ground movement immediately effected how the person fighting from the top position. We went through side control, mount, knee pins, scarf-holds and north south. We also looked at how the Swiss the ball could be used as an aid for this type of training. Next we transitioned through the pins before adding a little resistance. The ground often highlights self-defence relevance. We know that it is an area that many avoided at their cost, but at the same time it is an enticing game that can create dangerous habits if used out of context. I discussed the relevance of attribute training. We then looked at “The Switch” as an exercise for exploring the different dynamics between self-defence and sport. The session was finished with a series of heavy bag climbing exercises and work on the Swiss ball to training top and bottom areas of the ground game. A nice Swiss ball routine for ground work:
