Combat Grappling and Revision (diary entry)

08.08.13

The CCMA basic course in self-protection reached the combat grappling stage. Here the student addresses specific aspects of primal grappling from clinch and ground positions. Our approach to is to teach grappling only when striking is not a good option or in mid-level risk situations. This is why it is only taught when basic striking has been trained.

We began with obtaining and securing the rear naked choke/strangle. From here we addressed the guillotine, reverse arm-triangle and standard arm triangle into a takedown. Other variations on this takedown included the philtrum takedown. We also covered use of the seatbelt hold and rear waist lock in controlling a conflict. Escapes from the side head-lock were also addressed. Then we moved onto the finger lock/break

On the ground we covered escaping using the guard and some basic sweeps using the scissor guard. The use of the knee-pin/knee drop was also reinforced. We then covered escapes from the full-mount position.

Training then changed to revision, going back over pre-emption, incidental combinations, transitional postures, kicks, recovery, anti-grappling and then back to combat grappling.

Exercises were geared towards grappling such as standard and Hindu squats, Indian press-ups, sprawling, bridging and various crawls.
