Concepts and Games (diary entry)

19.03.12: Today’s session melded two concepts. We followed on from a combination taught last week and brought it under the umbrella of applied warm-up exercises taught tonight. These exercises were simple two-player games designed to teach concepts of certain ranges. First up was just some simple touch contact stand-up sparring, to work targeting and footwork. This was then changed to a game of heads and knees – when heads are called both participants aim to touch the other person’s head whilst defending their own and likewise with the backs of the knees. Next we did “Crazy Baby” – one participant moves forward on all fours and the other fends him off in the butterfly guard. Finally every took part in”Touch-the-Head” – one participant stands and the other lies on their back. The standing student tries to touch the head of the other one using their hands. This works the long guard concept.

Time permitted us to cover stand-up striking, which came from the touch-contact sparring. We covered the three punch/kick combination last week with the leg catch. Last week the person with the leg caught was taken down and we looked at attack and defence from the “ground ‘n pound position”. This time we looked at countering the leg catch. The kicked breaks the hold by hopping to keep balance and clinching. Moving onto the head and knees game, we used the concept to train hand strike/low shoot combinations – jab/double leg takedown and jab/cross/single leg takedown. We then moved to the butterfly guard position and covered a basic sweep into the mount position.

The lesson finished with five rounds of MMA sparring.
