Tonight I began the first two hours of teaching Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting to Zanshin Karate via my online service. We looked primarily at defence against scarf-hold but also moved into side control and looked at submissions.
The lesson began with an assessment of specific sparring where my clients demonstrated their escapes from the scarf-hold position. We looked a the traditional headlock scarf-hold but I also taught the under-hook version. I watched, coached, advised and suggested the following games:
Scarf-hold versus escape - very standard form of specific sparring used to assess the situation. Attacker's objective is continuous versus defender's objective to escape.
Pinning and escaping without use of the arms - This type of sparring emphasises better positioning, weight distribution from the top and leverage from underneath.
Scarf-holder's objective to transition to side control versus escaper's objective to free hips.
Scarf-holder's objective to trap arm, capture other arm or get head to shoulder side versus escaper's objective to roll onto side.
Scarf-holder's objective to get head onto trapped arm shoulder versus escaper's objective to free arm.
We then went through details on the arm triangle and snake-choke.
Takeaway points:
Be sensitive to weight distribution.
Do not chase after a technique.
Be proactive in your defence - seek opportunities rather than just escaping.
Make your pins tight. Think of them almost like submissions.
