12.10.2023 Hour six of my client's course of lessons in the build up to his charity Boxing match next month. Tonight we came back to me with more information from his training camp and problems encountered in sparring. Despite having a good account of himself he had troubles handling a taller opponent with a longer reach. Therefore we mainly focused on tactics and training to deal with this problem. Enter the glove on a stick solution. This simple training aid looks like a gimmick but actually serves a really good purpose i.e. handling a longer range jab. After a warm-up of dynamic stretching and opposite footwork, tonight's programme looked like this: Round 1 - Taking larger steps or fast short steps to move into range past the glove on the stick. It sounds overly simplistic but, in essence, my client's objective was to use his feet to get up close to his opponent's. After the first minute he began putting together combinations on the single focus mitt and belly pad. Round 2 - Cutting the ring off. Here used pivot steps to get past the stick-glove and get to the blind side. Round 3 - Double and triple jabs to fight inside the range of the stick. Round 4 - Ducking under the stick. Round 5 - Combining all ranges. Round 6 - We changed to some more live work with the shoulder touching reaction drill. Each fighter takes turns stating how many times they are going to try to touch their opponent's shoulder, 1, 2 or 3, and the opponent tries to avoid the touches. We made this a bit more difficult this time by standing toe-to-toe. Round 7 - Lead hand only sparring Round 8 - Body shots only sparring Round 9 - Free sparring. Note: As stated in previous blogs, all my client's rounds are 2 minutes in length to mimic the timeframe he will have to fight on the night. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
