06.10.2024 This Sunday Kuroten Practical Kartate in Wivenhoe, Colchester, kindly invited me back to teach a Vagabond Warriors seminar. This time our focus was on ground-fighting (the VW Guttersniping model) in line with helping to improve this area of training in the KPK classes and also extending to other friendly clubs, such as Ryukyukan in Pitsea and Forest School of Karate which were also in attendance. We went through three areas of symmetrical ground-fighting with the focus on the full-mount and basic guard position: Submission Grappling, Mixed Martial Arts and Self-Defence. We also expanded into half-guard tactics and the S-mount. There was a disproportionate amount of time spent on Submission Grappling, as this provides main foundation for cross-training in this respect. The other areas provide layering and shifts in perspective, working best if there is a good understanding of how to grapple on the ground. Submission Grappling Warm-ups included snaking against a gradual build-up of pressure, escaping from under the mount position with both side notes permitted to use their hands and fighting possession of an item in full-mount and guard. We then then layered up the attacks and defences from these attack and defence positions, eventually moving onto the constraints-led games proper. Full-Mount (arm-bar deconstruction) Positional games

  1. Begin in straight arm-bar position - attacker tries to hold onto the arm versus defender trying to free the arm

  2. Begin in S-mount - attacker tries to maintain S-mount position versus defender tries to escape

  3. Begin in full-mount with double under-hooks - attacker tries to maintain full-mount versus defender tries to escape

Transitional games

  1. Begin in straight arm-bar position with defender clasping their hands together - attacker tries to break grip versus defender tries to escape

  2. Begin in S-mount - attacker attempts to transition into arm-bar versus defender tries to escape

  3. Begin in full-mount with double under-hooks - attacker tries to transition to S-mount versus defender tries to escape

Exploration game: Begin in full-mount and attack with arm-bar whilst also looking for other submissions as the defender tries to escape. Half-guard

  1. Begin in knee-shield or Z-guard: attacker attempts to flatten in chest-to-chest versus defender tries to sweep, under-hook the leg or get dog-fight position

  2. Begin in chest-to-chest and lockdown position: attacker attempts to cross-face or choke versus defender attempts to sweep, under-hook the leg or get dog-fight position

  3. Begin on the side with lockdown position: attacker attempts to cross-face or choke versus defender attempts to sweep, under-hook the leg or get dog-fight position

MMA

  1. Begin in full-mount against the wall: attacker attempts to land five uninterrupted strikes to the head or get submission position versus defender attempts to escape

  2. Begin in guard: attacker attempts to drive defender to the wall versus defender attempts to stand-up or reverse the position

  3. Begin in half-guard: attacker attempts to land five uninterrupted strikes to the head or get a submission position versus defender attempts to stand-up, sweep or get to dog-fight position

Self-Defence

  1. Begin full mount: attacker lands a total of 10 stabs or slashes with a practice knife versus defender attempts escape

  2. Begin in guard: ditto

  3. Begin in ground position of choice. Bottom fighter attempts to access practice weapon whilst top fighter restrains them
