Isolating Attack & Defence (diary entry)

18.04.2024 As the title to this blog post indicates, Thursday night's 1.5 hour lesson focused on specific attack and defence strategies in Boxing. We put constraints on certain techniques and had one fighter only permitted to use them whilst the other was only permitted to defend (but not counter). This changed towards the end when we switched to more general strategies. After a dynamic warm-up we used the following 2-minute round format:

  1. Jabs vs defence

  2. Ditto

  3. Jab/straights vs defence

  4. Ditto

  5. Lead hook vs defence

  6. Ditto

  7. Lead hooks/rear hooks vs defence

  8. Ditto

  9. Lead uppercut vs defence

  10. Ditto

  11. Lead uppercut/rear uppercut vs defence

  12. Ditto

  13. Everything vs defence

  14. Ditto

  15. Front foot attacks vs rear foot attacks

  16. Ditto

  17. Free sparring

Isolating techniques forced the attacker to consider footwork and ranges, how to best double up and vary a punch. A long range hook is effectively coupled with a step-hook for example. Defenders looked at how guards work better for certain techniques than others and could spend more time on being fluid with their defence. Footwork strategies had more time to breathe too as did recognising tells and exploiting/closing up weaknesses. Two-minute rounds allowed for more variation when isolating techniques. The lesson finished with a static and PNF stretching warm-down. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
