Remote Online Boxing Personal Training
Boxing is a sport of strategy as much as strength. When training remotely, it can be challenging to convey the nuances of different fighting styles and tactics. In my fourth Remote Online Boxing Personal Training session with my client from Drum Martial Arts and Fitness in Ireland, we focused on mastering southpaw tactics and refining jab techniques. This session highlighted how remote training can effectively develop skills that are often thought to require in-person coaching.

Understanding Southpaw Stance and Tactics
The southpaw stance, where a boxer leads with their right hand and right foot forward, often confuses orthodox fighters who are used to facing opponents leading with their left side. Training remotely, I guided my client through the key elements of fighting from and defending against this stance.
Key points we covered:
Foot positioning: Southpaws keep their right foot forward to create angles that orthodox fighters find tricky. We practiced shifting footwork to maintain balance and control distance.
Lead hand use: The right jab is crucial for southpaws to disrupt their opponent’s rhythm. We drilled how to throw quick, sharp jabs to set up power shots.
Defensive awareness: Southpaws often face orthodox fighters who try to exploit their open side. We worked on head movement and guard adjustments to protect vulnerable areas.

Introducing the Up-Jab for Southpaws and Their Opponents
One of the standout techniques I introduced was the up-jab. This jab variation is thrown with a slight upward angle, targeting the opponent’s chin or nose. It’s especially useful against southpaws because it can bypass their guard and disrupt their timing.
We practiced the up-jab from both orthodox and southpaw perspectives:
For southpaws: Using the up-jab to surprise orthodox fighters who expect a straight jab.
Against southpaws: Teaching orthodox fighters to use the up-jab to counter the southpaw’s lead hand and create openings.
The up-jab requires precise timing and control, which we developed through shadowboxing drills and partner simulations over our video call. This technique added a new dimension to my client’s arsenal, making their jab more versatile and effective.
The Chopping Jab Favored by Taller Fighters
Another jab variation we explored was the chopping jab. Taller fighters often use this jab to keep opponents at bay, using a downward motion that “chops” through the opponent’s guard. It’s a powerful tool for controlling distance and setting up combinations.
During the session, I explained:
How the chopping jab differs from a traditional jab in angle and force.
When to use it effectively, especially against shorter, aggressive fighters.
How to maintain balance and avoid overcommitting when throwing the chopping jab.

Out-Boxing, Sluggers, and Swarmers: The Paper-Rock-Scissors of Boxing Styles
Boxing styles often interact like a game of paper-rock-scissors, where each style has strengths and weaknesses against the others. We discussed this dynamic to help my client understand how to adapt their tactics depending on the opponent.
Out-boxers: Fighters who rely on speed, distance control, and jabs to score points and avoid damage.
Sluggers: Power punchers who look to end fights with heavy shots.
Swarmers: Aggressive fighters who close distance quickly and throw high volumes of punches.
We analysed how southpaw tactics and jab variations fit into this framework:
Out-boxers use jabs like the up-jab and chopping jab to keep sluggers and swarmers at a distance.
Sluggers try to cut off the ring and land heavy punches, requiring out-boxers to use footwork and jabs to stay safe.
Swarmers overwhelm with pressure, so out-boxers must use angles and timing to counter.
This conceptual framework helped my client see the bigger picture of boxing strategy. We role-played scenarios over the video call, with me acting as different styles to test their responses.
