Mastering the Ankle Pick: Transitioning from Greco-Roman to Freestyle Wrestling Techniques - Wrestling Personal Training

Wrestling Personal Training

Wrestling is a complex sport with many styles and techniques, each offering unique advantages. As my client progresses on his MMA journey, we recently shifted focus from Greco-Roman Wrestling to Freestyle Wrestling during his sixth private wrestling class. This change introduced new stances, movements, and takedown strategies, with a special emphasis on the ankle pick. In this lesson report, I’ll share the key elements of the session, how we built the foundation for this technique, and why it’s an essential skill bridging the two wrestling styles.

Introducing the Freestyle Wrestling Stance and Movement

We began the class by warming up with exercises designed to highlight the differences between Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling stances. Unlike Greco-Roman, which emphasizes upper-body control and forbids attacks below the waist, Freestyle Wrestling encourages attacks on the legs and requires a more dynamic stance.

Key warm-up elements included:

  • Freestyle stance drills focusing on a lower center of gravity and wider base for better balance.

  • Sprawls to defend against leg attacks and improve hip mobility.

  • Footwork exercises to enhance agility and positioning.

These drills helped my client adjust his posture and movement patterns, preparing him for the ankle pick and other lowline attacks.

Revisiting Upper-Body Control Techniques

Before diving into the ankle pick, we reviewed several upper-body grips and controls that are crucial in both wrestling styles. These included:

  • Collar and elbow ties

  • Over-hooks and under-hooks

  • Arm-drags

These techniques set the stage for controlling the opponent’s upper body while creating openings for leg attacks. Ensuring these fundamentals were solid allowed my client to transition smoothly into the ankle pick drills.

Introducing the Leg Tag Game to Focus on the Ankle Pick

To make the learning process engaging and practical, we used a series of leg tag games. These games simulate real wrestling scenarios while focusing on specific goals. For this lesson, the objective was to score points only when one hand touched the opponent’s ankle.

The progression of games was as follows:

  1. Collar tie ankle tag: Both wrestlers maintain a collar tie and try to tag the opponent’s ankle.

  2. Wrist grip ankle tag: Wrestlers keep a wrist grip while attempting to tag the ankle.

  3. Opposite side underhook ankle tag: This variation challenges balance and control by combining an underhook with the ankle pick attempt.

Between each game, we drilled the ankle pick technique to reinforce muscle memory and proper mechanics.

Drilling the Ankle Pick Technique

The ankle pick is a fundamental takedown in Freestyle Wrestling that targets the opponent’s lower leg, often catching them off guard. The key steps we focused on include:

  • Establishing a strong upper-body grip (collar tie, wrist grip, or underhook).

  • Lowering the level and stepping in close to the opponent.

  • Reaching for the ankle with one hand while using the other hand to control the upper body.

  • Driving forward and pulling the ankle to off-balance the opponent.

  • Finishing the takedown by driving through or sweeping the leg.

We practiced these steps repeatedly, emphasizing smooth transitions and timing.

Analysing Variations Through Video Review

To deepen understanding, we watched videos showcasing a wide range of ankle pick variations. This visual analysis highlighted how wrestlers adapt the technique based on their position, opponent’s reactions, and match context. Seeing these variations helped my client appreciate the versatility of the ankle pick and how it connects Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling.

Why the Collar-Tie Ankle Pick Bridges Two Styles

The collar-tie ankle pick stands out as a perfect bridge between Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling. It combines the upper-body control familiar in Greco-Roman with the leg attacks unique to Freestyle. This makes it an ideal technique for wrestlers transitioning between styles or looking to expand their arsenal for MMA.

What’s Next: The Single Leg Takedown

Building on the ankle pick, the next lesson will focus on the single leg takedown. This technique naturally follows the ankle pick in Freestyle Wrestling and is a staple in MMA grappling. Mastering the ankle pick now sets a strong foundation for this progression.

This lesson demonstrated how Wrestling Personal Training can effectively guide a client through technical transitions while building practical skills for MMA. By focusing on stance, grips, drills, and game-like scenarios, my client gained confidence in the ankle pick and its applications.
