MMA Guard & Ranges (diary entry)

03.03.20   Tuesday night’s first lesson was my client’s second hour of his first Mixed Martial Arts course. We worked more on transitioning, the MMA guard and how each range relates to the bigger fighting picture.   Training began with the usual warm-up which we then progressed into some movement exercises. Here we first isolated movement patterns from various stages of a fight – Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, kneeling, seated and from the back. Then we blended these areas in a transitional footwork exercise. Finally, we began layering in punching combinations.   Next we moved onto the MMA guard. The smaller gloves and greater variety of weapons dictate the malleability of MMA guards. Western Boxing and Muay Thai principles apply, but the guards are typically wider unless covering/shelling. The hands are raised in order to block, parry, strike, post and also grip. We looked at the wing block and then moved onto the cover. Here we did an aggressive flow drill – jab/cross/cover/clinch. Then we looked at slipping and moving into a clinch. We used the slip/jab/arm triangle clinch/knee strikes/takedown/submission combination. This is a classic example of using all ranges at your disposal.   The lesson finished with 6 x 2 minute rounds of pad-work, each working from a different aspect of a fight. We began with boxing techniques using MMA gloves then shoot-boxing using MMA gloves then kickboxing using gloves then shoot-kickboxing using MMA gloves then ground and pound/guard passing, and finally guard to sweep or submit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBIHzv3iWGo
