Owning the Basics (diary entry)

jamie03066

Today we focused on specific drills to improve fundamental techniques. After our regular warm-up, involving footwork and general combative movement at all ranges, we went right back to sharpenign up the basics using a series of repetitive conditioning exercises.

We began with self-defence and the fence – that dividing line between soft and hard skills in self-protection. This was just a case of drilling the touch/strike behaviour. The student adopts a natural position with their defending hands disguised by passive gestures. The coach approach with the focus mitt target in view and touches “the fence” (raised hand) – the student strikes the target until it covered and adapts to the angles the target takes after being initially struck. The straight hand strike is then intensively drilled from the following postures: kneeling, seated, lyng on the back position and against the wall to correct telegraphing of strikes (stop the student pulling his arm back). The section was finished with 30 seconds striking push-up and 30 seconds rapid striking.

A similar process was done with hooks (restricted was done having the student standing side on to the wall) and finished with the oblique raise and strike.

Moving onto the clinch, we drilled taking the back and shooting for the lowline. Training finished with MMA sparring and then a functional fitness warm-down.
