05.08.19 My client’s fourth lesson on Basic Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training focused better development of the round kick and maintaining a good defence. I also introduced the hook punch and some longer combinations. The lesson began with a gentle warm-up followed by a circuit of agility ladders and agility cones. We went through forwards, backwards, lateral and angled footwork as well as chopping steps. The ladders reinforced simple individual movements whereas the cones dealt with changing direction against an opponent. Punches and kicks were built up over each round of the circuit. Moving onto the pads, we began with using jabs and teeps to set up other techniques. I also went back over the shin check and some simple defences to the body. The body check with a kick catch was introduced. From here the fighter was taught to break the opponent’s posture and to use a low round kick. I also encouraged both a fast response after receiving a kick and predicting an opponent’s response kick. We then focused on the basic two combinations: jab/round kick and jab/cross/round kick. Kicks were performed both to the leg and the body. We looked at tightening up the round kick, creating more impact, placing more emphasis on the pivot and the swing. The force of the Thai round kick comes from the torqueing of the body and the activation of the hip flexors. We looked at sinking the kicks in and correct hand placement. The hook was then introduced of the lead hand. Like all Thai techniques, the hook requires full body commitment. This was then incorporated into the basic combinations, giving my client her third official combination: jab/cross/hoo/round kick.
