18.08.16 Tonight’s private class was my client’s eighteenth lesson in his second course of Mixed Martial Arts for Martial Arts Cross Training. We continued with our theme of rolling attacks in grappling that we have been covering for the past three classes and also kick-catch counters that was introduced in the previous class. We warmed up with some shadow boxing, focusing on targeting and stance-work. Then we moved onto the various rolls – standard forward and back rolls, side rolls and forward and back shoulder rolls. Once again, I coached explosiveness of the movement and retaining balance at the completion of the movement. I also brought in a few continued attack movements to follow on from the roll to encourage a more complete and directed technique. We began on the ground, looking at one of the most basic of rolling attacks: the rear choke from back-mount position. Here the fighter takes the back of the turtle position of his opponent, keeping his weight back and moves in to get his first nearside hook into place. From here he either looks to place the choke using the seatbelt hold or goes for the second hook immediately. Whichever option he takes, the second hook is timed to correspond with the side roll motion. This turns the opponent onto their back making it easier to complete the submission. The roll needs to be explosive enough to not end up with the fighter being pinned on one side, where it is more difficult to finish the choke. If the roll is blocked then the choke can be attempted from the top position back mount. We then worked on a rolling knee-bar from standing. This was done as a counter to a counter. The fighter attacks with a double leg takedown, which is blocked by an under-hook. The fighter moves up into a headlock takedown position whilst pushing his leading leg though his opponent’s. From here he hooks the leg and forward rolls into the knee-bar submission. We moved onto the stand-up range and drilled some mid-level round kicks on the Thai focus mitts. Then we revised kick-catch work. We went back over the cross and the leg-rip/round knee combination. The former also offered another variation using the downward elbow. The lesson was finished with some freestyle MMA work.
