Southpaw and Cobra Punching Intensity (diary entry)

02.11.20 Monday night's second lesson was my client's second hour of Muay Thai training and conditioning. A veteran nak muay, he had a very intense lesson working through southpaw concepts and then set-ups for the cobra punch. Prior to teaching southpaw, we looked at lateral footwork and getting to the outside of a fighter. From here we mirrored our footwork and used teeps to the liver or spleen to disguise stepping to the outside of the lead foot. Combinations from the outside were begun with overhands, up-jabs and corkscrew uppercuts. The exposed mid-section facilitated diagonal knees and round kicks. The cobra punch set-ups used rear teep, jab/cross/low rear round kick/jab/cross and jab/rear mid round kick/45 degree round kick.
