This is the fifth in my client’s series of boxing for cross-training sessions. With the basic punches now in place, it was time to start over-viewing how they were put together and coordinated with full body movement. We began with an assessment of his punching on the bag. Here we looked at improving angles of attach and overall speed. Today we stayed away from power altogether with a strong focus on developing better body mechanics and speed.

Using a simple footwork drill I worked through basic on and offline steps behind a simple combination. We then brought the punches back in on the focus mitts. Then we went back to evasive manoeuvres, placing an emphasis on looking at countering rather than just negatively avoiding strikes. Each slip is movement to jab an exposed straight strike and each roll is a movement to hook or uppercut an exposed hook. My aim has always been to develop better activities to drive fighters to make the best decisions for them, creating their most efficient and natural techniques. By using obstacles, the fighter learns to adapt and take advantage of different angles.

Other restrictive methods were also brought into play, such as pinning the elbows to the sides to focus on better hand speed and body articulation. We broke down some basic combinations, including the Tyson Number 3 (uppercut/hook from the same side). The session was finished with some body shot only sparring. This is my client’s first boxing pressure test. He did well and showed a lot of tenacity. The exercise also helped reveal various weaknesses for him to work on before our next session.
