Strengthen defence with sharper counters

As with my client earlier in the week, my teenage client’s second hour of training introduced him to catching punches. However, I spent a lot of time confirming good head movement. Head movement needs to proactive, almost running the background of a fighter’s mind along with footwork as he plans his approach. The boxer doesn’t slip just to avoid punches but to offer bait and provide a moving target for an opponent.

We moved through a succession of rounds that moved from drilling - such as the jabbing machine where the client learns timing against a constant jab - to specific sparring. The specific sparring rounds focused on straight punches and promoted immediate counters from the catch. I then introduced the parry, where he learned how to reposition and pivot to counter.
