Submission Opportunities from Butterfly Guard (diary entry)

25.07.2023 My client's third submission grappling lesson with me brought us on to actual submission opportunities from butterfly guard. Up to this point we had mainly been focusing on sweeps from butterfly guard with only a rear naked choke being introduced after taking the back mount. Our warm-up this time consisted of a mixture of stationary positions and some crawls from butterfly guard. We then went back over some of the material from the previous two lessons before I began with a variation from the arm-drag back-take. The variation was a rolling back-take where my client ended up in an ideal position for the twister submission. I could not resist teaching this rather advanced and eccentric finishing hold. The technique is really only being learnt as a novelty here for my client as, being a spinal lock, it is banned in all traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions and only permitted in elite level no-gi competitions and MMA matches. It's also pretty difficult to pull off. We then looked more at the hammer-lock submission as alternative to over-hook elbow sweep from butterfly guard. This was followed by some front chokes, beginning with guillotine. I used this as an opportunity to introduce the anaconda choke and gator roll. Here sprawling was taught along with some application work where we discussed the importance of never double under-hooking when sprawling but to always have one arm in and one out. After the anaconda we went to the darce choke. The lesson was finished with a five-minute round of progressive, specific sparring. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
