17.12.2022 I met Iain Abernethy 18 years ago at a seminar run by "The Way of the Spiritual Warrior". After writing review of the seminar for a magazine, Iain and I became fast friends. He appeared on two of my DVDs and we've had some great discussions on our respective podcasts, not to mention endless epic length telephone conversations. It seems ironic that out of all my martial arts colleagues I found the most shared common ground in terms of approach with a traditional karateka. And yet not only have I benefited in learning from Iain over all this time, but he has also connected me to the world of practical traditionalists, many of whom have become highly valued clients. We were booked by Athena School of Karate and Grove Martial Arts to teach 2 x 1 hour slots on stand-up striking. Hour One - I taught three punching combinations from boxing and Mixed Martial Arts, emphasising cadence shifts between speed and power. Hour Two - Iain taught a three punch combination, emphasising power through transitioning. The strikes covered an upward punch backwards, a hook on a pivot step and step forward straight punch. Hour Three - We covered two kickboxing and Mixed Martial arts combinations. Again, this was concerned with cadence shifting - turning usually powerful strikes into fast strikes and vice versa. Hour Four - Iain looked at more close range striking, including clinching, takedowns and ground-fighting. The seminar was sold out and attended by some great teachers from across the country. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
