As my couple clients reached the final part of their last course on rhythm and flow combinations I set them a task to select three they wished to nail in this session. We are continuing and concluding the integration phase introduced in the previous lesson where the combinations would form part of their freestyle work. Next week we will be starting a new journey looking at switch-hitting and fight tactics and strategies. My clients had 12 rounds to spend on three chosen combinations from the list 14 that we have been working on since December last year. They chose combinations three, six and nine.
Combination Three - jab/cross/slip/cross/hook/cross/slip/cross/hook/rear round kick/hook/cross/hook/slip/hook/rear round kick
This combination is one of the most the most Dutch-style in design in that it consists of very lengthy boxing combinations and slips to set up to big round kicks.
Combination Six - double jab/cross/rear backfist/hook/lead backfist/stepping cross/spinning backfist
This combination is the most MMA style in design. Few stand-up kickboxing sports allow or encourage the standard backfist or hammer-fist strike despite them being very common in lighter contact strike-based sports. Spinning variations are permitted under certain rules. As can be seen, this combination doubles up three times in sequence with the left, the right and the left again before using a cross to set up the big spinning technique. In order reduce telegraphing and to encourage an opponent to step back for the spinning technique, I teach the cross as a stepping technique where you change stance landing the punch as lead strike in southpaw (or orthodox if you are a southpaw fighter).
Combination nine - jab/cross/side-step/hook/cross/weave/cross/hook/cross/slip/cross/switch-kick
This is another very Dutch style combination where a very lengthy series of punches are used to set up one lead leg kick. It is also the combination that most focuses on lateral movement and evasions, using side-step, a weave and a slip to set up counter punches.
Each of the 12 three minute rounds was alternated between the couple. With one of the couple on the focus mitts and the other shadowing the movements.
Rounds 1-2 - Combination three in isolation, building intensity.
Rounds 3-4 - Integration of combination three into freestyle work.
Ronds 5-6 - Combination six in isolation, building intensity.
Rounds 7-8 - Integration of combination six into freestyle work.
Rounds 9-10 - Combination nine in isolation, building intensity.
Rounds 11-12 - Integration of combination nine into freestyle work.
