General Lesson – Mixed Martial Arts – All Ranges
The lesson began with a student-led warm-up, incorporating all ranges. We then began with a punch/kick combination as a starting point. Students were encouraged to not only to build onto the combination, but to train it with appropriate reactions, prompting contingency tactics and counter-techniques. We then added a lowline takedown off the jab.
Next we moved to the ground taking the view of the student being taken down. This began with jumping guard. Typically a person who is trying to defend a lowline takedown will try to sprawl and keep the fight standing. However, if you feel you can fight a stronger game from the bottom then jumping guard can be a good alternative. Next we covered a fast arm-bar. This method differs from the basic arm-bar and is similar to the way one attacks with a triangle choke. You climb the guard, trapping both shoulders in and then hyperextend the elbow joint.
The lesson was finished with a few rounds of MMA sparring.
