Martial Arts Cross Training
When working with new clients in martial arts personal training, I always look for ways to keep sessions engaging and effective. On hour five of a recent mixed martial arts cross-training course, I reintroduced a unique tool that I first used during a kickboxing workshop: the secret dice game. This game adds an exciting layer of strategy and unpredictability to training. Tonight I adapted the concept to the Submission Grappling arena. You will read how the secret dice game challenges both partners to think creatively while sharpening their technical skills.
Here’s how the secret dice game can unlock growth in your submission grappling training and why it’s a valuable addition to any training routine.

How the Secret Dice Game Works
The rules are simple but clever. Each round, both sparring partners roll a die or dice in secret. The number rolled corresponds to a specific technique or strategy from a numbered list. Only the techniques linked to the rolled number count for scoring during that round. All other techniques are allowed but do not score points.
The goal is twofold:
Hide your scoring techniques so your partner cannot predict your moves.
Figure out your partner’s scoring number by observing their strategy and techniques.
This creates a dynamic mental and physical challenge that goes beyond traditional sparring.
Adapting the Game for Submission Grappling
Submission grappling requires a different approach than striking arts like kickboxing. To keep the game balanced and realistic, we alternate rounds between the top and bottom positions. Each position has its own list of techniques and strategies linked to the dice roll.
Top Position Techniques
Side control
Knee pin
Full mount
Scarf-hold
Back mount
Reverse scarf-hold
After the initial roll, a second roll determines the type of finishing move:
Odd numbers mean joint locks
Even numbers mean chokes
Bottom Position Techniques
Full guard
Half guard
Butterfly guard with hooks in
De La Riva guard
Turtle guard
X guard
The second roll here decides the focus:
Odd numbers mean sweeps
Even numbers mean submissions
By structuring the game this way, both partners get to practise offensive and defensive skills from different positions, which is essential for well-rounded grappling.
Why This Game Boosts Martial Arts Personal Training
1. Builds Tactical Thinking
The secret dice game forces you to think several moves ahead. You must decide which techniques to use while hiding your intentions. This mental challenge mirrors real competition, where unpredictability and strategy often decide the outcome.
2. Encourages Adaptability
Since the scoring techniques change each round, you can’t rely on a fixed game plan. You learn to adapt quickly, switching between guards, submissions, and escapes depending on the dice roll. This flexibility is crucial in mixed martial arts.
3. Enhances Technical Precision
Focusing on specific techniques each round helps you drill those moves with intention. Instead of random sparring, you get targeted practice that improves your execution and timing.
4. Improves Observation Skills
Trying to guess your partner’s scoring number sharpens your ability to read body language and movement patterns. This skill translates directly to real fights, where reading your opponent’s intentions can give you a critical edge.
5. Makes Training More Engaging
Adding an element of surprise and competition keeps motivation high. Clients often report that the secret dice game makes their martial arts personal training sessions more fun and less repetitive.
Practical Tips for Using the Secret Dice Game in Your Training
Start with clear rules so both partners understand the scoring system and technique lists.
Use a standard six-sided die for simplicity, or multiple dice for more complex variations.
Alternate top and bottom positions each round to ensure balanced skill development.
Keep rounds short (3-5 minutes) to maintain intensity and focus.
Discuss each round afterward to share insights and improve strategy.
Adjust the technique lists based on your skill level and training goals.
Example Round Breakdown
Imagine you roll a 3 on the first die while in the top position. That means you must use the full mount position to score. Your second roll is 4, an even number, so you focus on chokes. During the round, you work to establish full mount and look for choke submissions, while your partner tries to guess your numbers and defend accordingly.
Next round, you switch to the bottom position. You roll a 5, which corresponds to the butterfly guard with hooks in. Your second roll is 1, an odd number, so you focus on sweeps. Now your goal is to use butterfly guard sweeps to reverse the position and score points.
This back-and-forth keeps both partners engaged and constantly adapting.
Final Thoughts on Using the Secret Dice Game
In my experience, the secret dice game adds a fresh dimension to martial arts personal training. It combines technical skill development with strategic thinking and adaptability. For new clients especially, it breaks the monotony of standard drills and sparring, making learning more interactive and rewarding.
