My client and I decided to return to the clinch range. After a warm-up of collar-tie bulling, over-hook/under-hook pummelling, arm-drag pummelling and uncooperative level changing for shoot set-ups, we looked at both Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling by breaking them down to their most fundamental level. This was done using the following 2-minute round games:
Asymmetrical foot-stepping sparring - trains footwork, shooting and penetration steps
Symmetrical foot-stepping sparring - trains the above with footwork defence
Ditto with added collar-tie - harmonising upper body grips with footwork
Collar-tie sparring
Wrist-grip with foot-stepping sparring
Wrist-grip only sparring
Arm-drag with foot-stepping sparring
Arm-drag only sparring
Collar-tie, wrist-grip and arm-drag only sparring
Thigh tag (aim to grip) sparring
Thigh tag with collar-tie sparring
Thigh tag with all upper-body sparring
After a discussion on the aims and purpose of these games, we sparred for 2 x 3 minute rounds. The first round was restricted to Greco-Roman Wrestling techniques and the second to Freestyle Wrestling.
