24.08.2022 Hour three of my client's current course on boxing moved us into looking at defensive footwork, layered into effective striking combinations. Tonight, more than usual, I emphasised the use of the back foot pivot. This allows for faster lead hooks and efficient slipping. We began with simple backward and forward footwork, using the ankles to keep movements light and fluid. We then added the pivot-circling out movement. These sequences came off the jab and the cross, depending on which was thrown last. We then brought in backward slipping. In this instance we used pivoting off the back foot to allow for economy of movement and creating opportunities for counters. This was then combined with the aforementioned footwork first in sequence and then providing the fighter with some autonomy as to when he could circle out. For example: pivot-slip out from a jab/pivot-slip back from a cross, pivot-slip out from a jab, pivot-circle out. Next I layered in two simple combinations: jab/cross/hook/cross and hook/cross/hook. When looking at the lead hook we discussed the value of the back foot pivot again. Cuban boxing likes to keep the front foot fairly flat and do most of the work with the rear foot, where the heel is raised off the ground and pivots a lot. They do this to allow for more speed and to facilitate punches in combinations. This can and often changes when the hooks are thrown at close range where the added power from a front foot pivot is helpful. The back foot only pivot approach works well in Muay Thai and MMA when a pivoting front foot is vulnerable to round kicks. Putting it all together we had forward bait/backward lure (or pull)/jab/cross/hook/cross/slip-out from jab/pivot to circle out/hook to the body/cross/hook. At the end I tagged on triple jab to circle back. In a previous lesson we looked at the way Sugar Ray Robinson used double-jabs and multiple jabs in order to circle into the power hand side where he would often throw he famous left hook. The jabbing provides effective cover fire in order to move to this dangerous side or to reposition back. The lesson finished with 2 x 3 minute rounds based on my client's request. The first round focused entirely on speed and the second round on power. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
