My client has returned after two weeks away and I was happy to see that he had kept up the various Triple C exercises I gave him. This meant he was able to get straight back in and we ramped up the intensity. After a freestyle warm-up on the heavy bag we did some line-work, training forward propulsion with straight techniques such as jabs, crosses, forward knees and double leg takedowns. Then we did some dynamic stretching, again working the forward momentum and focusing on balance when in motion. These characteristics are intrinsic in good combat conditioning.
Then we went through sets of 10 of various specific combative movements. This included rolling to combat base, sit-throughs, double leg takedowns, sprawls, snaking/shrimping forwards and backwards and bridging. We also went through the applications for all these movements. Combative training should be, by its nature, a very naturalistic way of training. What I mean by this is that most movements should have a direct relevance to many commonplace actions. Unless you are specifically addressing the mechanics of a technique or warming down they should generally be intensive in nature too, as this best resembles the conditions in which they would be used. The session was finished with some PNF stretching as a warm-down.
