Blunt Weapon Defence (diary entry)

Today’s lesson was completely concerned with all aspects of weapon defence. We warmed up with a brief revision of pre-emptive striking and incidental combinations. Next we went through the basic inceptions to different angles of attack into three control positions against an edged weapon.

With this revision confirmed we moved from edged weapons to blunt weapons. Blunt weapons are likely to be a defender’s choice of incidental weapon from maglites to sticks to chairs. I do not advise an edged weapon due to the danger of it being used againt the defender in some way. A blunt weapon provides the defender with range.

We drilled the use of a Maglite as forehand and back hand tactic, hittng highline, lowline and offline targets. We also explored this through a basic stick-on-stick drill.  This was then used to briefly demonstrate some universal body mechanics.

Next we looked unarmed defence against a blunt weapon. As with edged weapon defence, looking for an exit and escape are the first responses that should be taught. If these cannot be immediately achived then acquiring an incidental weapon should be the defender’s plan B. A blunt weapon’s danger comes from its impact. It needs range to generate sufficient force and unlike an edged weapon has little potency at very close range. With this in mind, a defender who cannot get an incidental weapon will need to intercept it in order prevent the attack or to reduce impact. We looked at smothering the attack and controlling the weapon arm, this works off the same principle as the edged weapon interceptions. Then we covered handgun disarms as discussed in another recent diary entry.
