Hour 4 of Kickboxing Personal Training - Introduction
Tonight, my teenage client made significant strides in integrating punches and kicks with a newfound fluidity that reflects his growing skill set. Throughout our kickboxing personal training, he has already been introduced to a variety of fundamental kicks, which are essential for this basic level of martial arts proficiency. While we have yet to incorporate knee strikes—an element that will be introduced later in this course—he has now grasped the foundational kicks that will serve as the building blocks for his development. With this solid groundwork in place, it is now imperative that he learns to effectively combine these kicks with the Boxing techniques he has been mastering over the previous 10 lessons. This synthesis of skills is crucial for his progression and will enhance his overall performance in the ring.
During our session, I guided my client through a series of structured 3-minute rounds, each designed to target specific aspects of his training. The first nine rounds were meticulously crafted as a sequence of layered drills, aimed at progressively building his confidence and competence in delivering, defending against, and countering kicks. This approach not only reinforced his understanding of the techniques but also significantly contributed to his ability to move fluidly between different strikes. The emphasis on fluidity is vital; it allows him to transition seamlessly from punches to kicks and back again, creating a more dynamic and unpredictable fighting style.
As we moved into rounds 10 and 11, the focus shifted to maintaining movement and repetition of the most effective combinations on the pads. This phase of the training was crucial, as it allowed him to practice the combinations he had learned in a more dynamic environment, simulating the unpredictability of a real fight. The final round, round 12, was strategically divided into three distinct sections: the first section granted him some autonomy, allowing him to creatively deliver punch/kick combinations based on his understanding of the techniques. The subsequent two sections were dedicated to honing his fluidity, focusing on delivering individual kicks with precision and control, ensuring that he could execute each technique effectively under pressure.
Throughout these rounds, we focused on various drills that emphasised the interplay between boxing and kicking techniques. The following list outlines the specific exercises we covered:
One-for-one teeps: Practicing front kicks to maintain distance and create openings.
One-for-one round kicks: Engaging in reciprocal roundhouse kicks to develop timing and accuracy.
Boxing versus teeps: Working on boxing techniques while countering incoming teeps, enhancing defensive skills.
Teeps versus boxing: Practising teeps while responding to boxing strikes, reinforcing adaptability.
Boxing versus round kicks: Focusing on boxing combinations while defending against round kicks to build resilience.
Round kicks versus boxing: Executing round kicks in response to boxing strikes, improving offensive strategies.
Boxing versus all kicks: A comprehensive drill that integrates all boxing techniques against various kicks, promoting versatility.
All kicks versus boxing: Practicing a range of kicks while responding to boxing attacks, encouraging fluid transitions.
Kickboxing (all punching and kicking techniques): A full integration of skills, allowing him to apply everything learned in a cohesive manner.
Teeps/low round kicks/punching combinations - Thai pads, belly pad, and leg pad: Focusing on specific combinations to enhance power and accuracy.
Punching combinations/all kicks - Thai pads and belly pad: Reinforcing the relationship between punches and kicks in a controlled environment.
Minute 1 all punching combinations chained with kicks; minute 2 constant alternate round kicks; minute 3 constant alternate teeps - heavy bag burn out: A high-intensity finale designed to test endurance and execution under fatigue.
Overall, this structured approach not only aims to refine my client's technical skills but also to instil a sense of confidence in his abilities. As he continues to practice and integrate these techniques, I am confident that he will develop into a more formidable fighter, capable of adapting to various situations in the ring with ease and agility.
