25.05.16 The ninth lesson of my client’s second course on Mixed Martial Arts for Martial Arts Cross-Training focused on attacking the back from a sit-through position, back position and transitioning from the top position in ground fighting. We began with a warm-up of sport specific movements. This included shadow boxing, sprawling and sit-throughs. The sit-through sequence led to an exploration of the technique, including reasons for all its important stages. We used it to execute a back-mount. From here we looked at countering a choke counter and the different back positions. All good submission fighters will be wary of crossing their feet, as it leaves them open to an ankle-lock. However, the ankles can be crossed to the side and an extreme variation of this move can be seen in the body triangle. This is where the ankle is enveloped by the back of the knee joint as a fighter would use when executing a leg triangle choke. We then moved onto transitioning from the top position. Here my client revised the transitioning drill we use to teach this movement. I then isolated each position and brought in various submission suggestions. We then went through striking from these positions. The lesson finished with striking through postures on the focus mitts. We trained both speed exercises and power exercises from guard, butterfly guard, combat base and standing in guard.
