26.05.2023 Friday morning’s lesson brought my teacher client from USKO Cotswolds onto hour eight of his submission grappling/ground fighting course. We finished off the north-south pin work by linking it with the previous two pins and then I introduced escaping the knee-pin. For the former I used the heat-seeking Kimua, which is a great way introduce the versatility of this arm-lock whilst demonstrating the importance of being able to transition between pins. The sequence starts in side control with an Americana attack. It then transitions to a Kimura in the same position, teaching the importance of being able to seamlessly move from one attempted submission to another. Then, in response to the opponent fighting back, the pin changes to scarf-hold before going to north-south. With the Kimura still being resisted at this point the fighter uses the hand-position to create a powerful grip to now execute a traditional arm-bar. This is is also a new technique and set up for my client. For the latter, we looked at two defences against the knee-pin. I initially taught the importance of blocking the knee, relieving pressure, and then cupping foot before using the entire body as a single unit to bridge. This most simple of the counters can result in the opponent scrambling to side control. It's far from perfect but at least the knee-pin is off and the fighter can be in a strong framing position to continue defending. A better solution is for the fighter to use the blocking hand to hook the opponent's leg and scramble to turtle and then to dog-fight position, looking for the sweep or back-take options we covered two lessons ago. Another good solution is to thread the non-blocking arm rather than cup the foot and stick with the opponent when bridging. Here the fighter rolls the opponent on his back. However, it is very important that the fighter immediately stiff-arms the opponent with their free arm to remove the threaded appendage once the sweep has been executed. Leaving it trapped risks them ending up in a bicep-crush. https://clubbchimera.com/services/
