Introducing Teeps in Kickboxing (Remote Martial Arts Teacher Training)

Remote Martial Arts Teacher Training

Saturday morning’s two-hour remote martial arts teacher training saw Hinnerup Karate in Denmark return. Having covered boxing over their past two two-hour lessons online, they decided to switch to kickboxing. This is all part of me helping train their instructors and senior students to better teach a kickboxing program that will be integrated into their practical karate syllabus. We discussed that the best way to teach this was to train the basics of boxing and then integrate kickboxing. My style of kickboxing is a hybrid of Muay Thai and boxing, taking my cue from Dutch and Japanese styles rather than the American style.

Today we focused entirely on the teep kick. This was trained through a series of exercises, drills, and specific sparring. It is very important to encourage safe live training in order to assess individuals’ skills rather than to get bogged down in technical line work and compliant drilling. This keeps training honest and usually more enjoyable.

So, once we had gone through the basic mechanics of the kick as part of our warm-up, I set up the following exercises:

Introducing Teep - Attack & Defence

  1. Taking turns to push away each other with the front foot. This teaches teep in its rawest form, helps maintain control, and teaches both students to better absorb the technique (check their posture and balance).

  2. Teeps versus blocks. Introduce sweep/scoop block against teeps. Attack versus defense sparring.

  3. Teeps versus blocks. Layer on inside knee checks against teeps. Attack versus defense.

  4. Teeps versus blocks. Layer on catching teeps as the opponent tries to score with teeps.

  5. Teep only sparring.

Combining punches With Teeps

  1. Boxing only sparring - revision from the previous course and to get everyone back into using punches.

  2. Boxing versus teeps.

  3. Teep and jab versus defense. Learning to feint with either technique to deliver the other.

  4. Straight punches and teep only sparring.

  5. All punches and teep only sparring.

We then transferred training onto focus mitts so that more speed and power could be trained, as well as some simple combinations for more retention in lessons.
